Reading is an important skill your child will use for the rest of his or her life. Solidify your child’s reading comprehension abilities by teaching him or her that reading is fun and enjoyable.

Start Early
The earlier your child begins reading, the easier it is for him or her to gain confidence in the skill. Begin by reading to your child. If your child is just beginning to read, ask your child to repeat certain words in order to engage his or her mind. Make reading a daily habit. A great time to read is before bed time.

Get a Library Card
A library card is free and the library is a great atmosphere to cultivate his or her skill. Libraries have a plethora of subjects, so your child will enjoy choosing topics that are related to his or her interest. Have your child borrow his or her own books in order to gain feelings of responsibility.

Find Books that Relate to their Interests
If your child does not know his or her own interest, this is a great time to begin. Peruse each aisle in the children’s section of the library and ask your child if he or she would like to delve into a new topic. Your child will best benefit from an open-minded perspective.

Have Book Discussions
After reading a book, you can discuss the story. Having book discussions helps your child exercise analytical skills. Your child will be able to reflect upon the characters, the plot and more. Book discussions are a great way to prepare for school, particularly if your child has yet to start preschool.

Be an Example
As a parent, you are an important role model for your child. Children are excellent mimics. Be sure to have your child see you enjoying a book, newspaper or magazine.
