Having solid study skills can carry on from early childhood into college. Solidify your child’s study habits by starting now. Having effective study skills can offer an academic advantage, as well as an edge in life. By exercising good study habits, your child will also be practicing discipline, focus and diligence.

Defeat Procrastination
One of the worst habits that anyone can fall into is procrastination, particularly chronic procrastination. Remedy procrastination by planning ahead. Also, let your child understand that “now” is the moment that a person has the most power and by putting off something that can be done now would be a lessening of power. Get your child in the habit of planning ahead and seizing power in the “now” and he or she will nip procrastination at the bud.

Offer a Reward
If your child receives high marks on an assignment or exam, offer a reward for a job well done. This can be anything from a verbal reward to a delicious ice cream cone. However, make sure that these rewards are distinct for the situation, meaning that your child only receives it when he or she effectively studies and receives a result.

Organize
A successful student is often an organized one. Take time to teach your child how to organize his or her backpack.

Analyze
Discuss ways to become an effective student. For example, talk about different ways to take notes. If your child needs advice in how to focus, offer different techniques on focusing, such as effectively zoning in on the teacher’s words.

Reflect
Some children study well in groups. As a parent, you can help by having your child reflect upon what he or she has just learned. Your child can then relate theory to real-life examples which further solidifies a concept in his or her mind.
