Cultivating a cultured child means developing an open-minded individual. How can you raise a cultured child? Start by exposing your child to a variety of cultures, traditions and activities. Encourage your child to explore areas that are different from the norm. Have your child try out new skills, such as art, dance or horseback riding.

Read Books
Find books about other cultures and countries. Visit the library and explore the “Geography” area in the children’s section. Books with vivid photography of other countries can be exciting for children and adults alike. Read stories about characters who have adventures all over the world. Find a globe and have your child study it.

Explore the Arts and Music
Expose your child to different kinds of art and music. Again, the library is an accessible spot that offers books on art and music CDs. You can also hunt for art online and download music from all over the world. Take your child to a museum or art gallery. You can also go to concerts with global music. Enroll your child in cultured activities, such as ballet, painting and music. Support your child in having a hands-on experience in the arts.

Encourage Diversity
You can play your part and encourage diversity from home. Cook different ethnic cuisines, from Mexican to Japanese. Be sure to associate a story about each culture associated to your experience. If you have relatives or friends who have ties to a different culture, have them come over and talk about it. During the holiday season, talk about the holidays that other cultures are celebrating and how they are different or similar to your own family’s traditions. Have your child to learn how to respect people’s differences and similarities through open-minded discussions.
