A child who eats healthy is typically the dream of every family doctor. A child does not naturally lean toward healthy eating. After all, there are numerous temptations out there, such as those famously convenient fast food meals that come with highly sought after toys. As a parent, it’s up to you to draw the line and have your child get into the habit of healthy eating. Where should you begin?

Eliminate Bad Foods
Parents, it is up to you to eliminate bad foods in your household. This may be a difficult feat, especially if you enjoy eating fast food yourself. The best way to start is by finding substitutes for unhealthy foods. For example, if you are an ice cream lover, replace the fatty ice cream with low-fat frozen yogurt.

Set an Example
It’s only inevitable that you’ll have to take part in healthy eating, unless you’re already on a nutritious diet. Children mirror their parents, so if they witness you slipping up, they’ll probably think it’s okay to do the same thing. So, consider replacing that hamburger with a soy burger when your kids are around.

Give Healthy Options
Encourage your kids to eat healthy foods. Explain to them the benefits of eating health food. In a sense, you are selling eating healthy to their values system. The earlier the age, the underdeveloped the value system. This essentially means that kids are highly impressionable the younger they are. Be lighthearted about healthy eating and offer your kids options. Offer them different fruits or juices to choose from. Better yet, include them on a shopping trip to the organic grocery store.

Get into a Habit
Make healthy eating a habit. At any age, healthy eating isn’t just a choice, it simply becomes a lifestyle. Your child may desire fast food, especially if they’ve previously had it before. Make this an option every once in awhile, such as their birthday.
