It is the time kid’s dread and parents usually crave. It is back to school season. Getting back to the school routine can be easier for some children than others. There are some things parents can do to make the transition easier.
Take children back to school shopping. If children are part of the process of picking out some of their clothes and supplies it gets them excited about the return to school. They don’t have to go to all the preparation shopping but just being a small part of it can make them feel proud they picked out their own stuff for school and makes them ready to use their supplies.
It is a good idea a few weeks before school resumes to start to establish a wake up and bedtime routine. Studies show sleep is better if people get up and go to bed at the same consistent times. It does not work well to try to get a child to go bed early for the first time or wake up early for the first time the first day of school. This usually results in both unhappy children and parents. Children become accustomed to going to bed later and sleeping in later during their summer breaks. It takes a few weeks to establish a different routine. Parents should be wise to start the school routine at least two weeks before school resumes.
Start eating “school food” a week before school starts. Summer time tends to be lazy time and often children graze throughout the day and don’t eat nutritious meals. A good breakfast and good nutrition is essential to good performance at school.
These tips can help make the back to school transition easier for both the parent and the child.
