Going away to college for the first time is a big deal. Most people will experience a wide range of emotions, but during those worrisome moments, it is critical to remember to bring with you everything you will need. Further, there are a few things many college students forget to do, even when the student is well organized. The first step is to make a list of all the things you need to consider as you make this move. Contact the school directly and inquire about what the school provides to students. This may include everything from furniture to laptops, in some cases. Other necessities are rarely provided so it will be your responsibility to bring them with you.

Another item for your list is housing. Where will you live? If you are considering apartments for rent in Atlanta, for example, plan to look for an apartment in the early to mid summer months or even sooner, unless you are willing to commute. Most apartments within a few miles of your school will book quickly. If you plan to live in a dorm, learn the restrictions and qualifications for doing so.

You also need to consider other factors and add them to your list. Will you need a car on campus? If so, where will you park the vehicle? You may also need to consider finances. How will you cover the cost of food, supplies, and entertainment? You may wish to work out a plan with your parents where they give you a prepaid debit card to fund your purchases at school. It is not a good idea to take a large sum of money with you to campus. Once you work out these factors, begin considering what you will actually pack, from a hair dryer to your favorite books, movies, and music.
