Preparing Your Child For Life: Focus on Education

Good parenting isn’t just about your little one’s childhood.  Good parenting also focuses on the future… in fact, it must.  After all, the goal of a great parent is to prepare his or her child for adulthood.  One critical part of that preparation is a focus on the child’s education. Parents must take an interest in their children’s educational habits from the very beginning, and it’s not only so that their children succeed in their current educational efforts.  A strong, positive focus on education now will help to prepare a child for higher education, as well as his or her eventual career.

And good performance in school from the beginning sets a pattern of success that a child will keep throughout his or her lifetime.  If children learn in elementary school that their focus, enthusiasm, talents, and successes are noticed and valued by their parents, that knowledge will help them succeed in middle and high school as well.  That success can lead to scholarships and acceptance into the best institutions of higher education.  More than that however, making education a positive priority teaches valuable lessons for life itself.  Education isn’t just about learning language and mathematics and history. It’s also about learning to learn. Learning to work hard.  Learning to interact with others, and learning to contribute to society.

Good parenting focuses on preparation for the future, and in making education a priority, good parents are becoming great parents.  They’re preparing their children for great jobs, and to be great people.  Take an interest in your child’s grades.  Talk to your child about what’s exciting to learn about in school, what’s challenging, and what’s sparking his or her imagination.  Education is important–set a good example.
